HOW TO MEASURE STAINLESS STEEL PIPES AND TUBES

The pipe is generally recognized by NPS, together with the wall depth characterized by SCH. NPS can be a symptom of a dimension but not a real size and is a designator. NPS 1/8 via NPS 12 has an outside diameter that’s characterized by the pipe dimensions that are ANSI. Generally, a schedule 40 pipe size for as much as 12 NPS is approximately equivalent to the ID of the tube. This can be confusing for people new to the business. Pipe sizes 14 and over are somewhat less confusing as a 14 NPS is equivalent to 14″ OD.

About Seamless Pipes

A seamless tube is a tube that does not have any welding seam. The seamless tube will ideally be a solid metal tube with each end connected to another tube without having any welding joint. About Welded Pipes

The welded pipe starts out as a long, coiled ribbon of steel called a skelp. The skelp is cut to the desired length, resulting in a flat rectangular sheet. The width of that sheet’s shorter ends will become the pipe’s outside circumference, a value that can be used to calculate its eventual outside diameter.

Welded pipe manufacturing techniques have improved over the years. Perhaps the most important advancement has been the switch to high-frequency electric currents for welding. Prior to the 1970s, the low-frequency current was used. Weld seams produced from low-frequency ERW were more prone to corrosion and seam failure.
